UNIVERSITY HEADS OF FACULTY ACQUAINT FRESHMEN WITH ACTIVITIES OF RESPECTIVE SCHOOLS

MMUSO Chairperson, Mr. Benjamin Mutisya addressing first year students in the School of Arts and Social Sciences.

On September 6th, 2023, the Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) organized a series of meetings between the heads of faculty and the first-year students. The purpose of these meetings was to officially introduce the first-year students to their respective heads of faculty, including Deans and Course Directors (CoDs), as well as to provide information about academic staff and various activities taking place within the Schools. Additionally, the University's Student Leadership Organization (MMUSO) played an active role in engaging with the first-year students during these sessions.

The meetings were conducted at various venues across the MMUST campus, each corresponding to a specific faculty. The heads of faculty, Deans, CoDs, academic staff, and MMUSO representatives were present at each venue to welcome and address the incoming first-year students. Key Highlights: Faculty Introductions: During the meetings, each faculty's head and academic leadership introduced themselves and provided an overview of their respective schools, programs, and academic staff. This introduction aimed to familiarize the students with the faculty structure and the individuals responsible for their academic guidance. Academic Information: Detailed information about academic programs, courses, and curriculum requirements was shared with the first-year students.

The students were informed about academic resources, support services, and the academic calendar for the upcoming semester. Extracurricular Activities: The meetings also emphasized the importance of extracurricular activities and student involvement in campus life. MMUSO, led by Chairperson Mr. Benjamin Mutisya, actively participated in these sessions. Mr. Mutisya and other MMUSO representatives encouraged the students to join clubs, societies, and participate in campus events. Q&A Sessions: Students were given the opportunity to ask questions and seek clarifications during the meetings. Faculty members and MMUSO leaders responded to inquiries, addressing concerns and providing guidance as needed.

The faculty meetings with first-year students held on September 6th, 2023, were successful in achieving their objectives. The students now have a better understanding of their respective faculties, academic expectations, and available support services. The presence and active engagement of MMUSO added an encouraging and welcoming atmosphere for the incoming students. We believe that these meetings have set a positive tone for the academic year ahead, promoting a sense of belonging and enthusiasm among our new students. Recommendations: It is recommended to continue organizing such orientation meetings for first-year students in the future. This practice helps in easing the transition into university life and fosters a strong sense of community within the institution.
